Support the University of Detroit Jazz Orchestra (UDJO) and Music Department Initiatives!
The University of Detroit Jazz Orchestra (UDJO) is our most prolific ensemble, performing 8–10 times per semester both on campus and throughout Metro Detroit. Highlights of the UDJO’s achievements include:
- A featured performance at the Detroit Jazz Festival, the largest free jazz festival in the world.
- Performances at renowned venues like Cliff Bell’s Jazz Club, Music Hall, and Cadieux Cafe.
- Opening for prominent ensembles such as the Wayne State University Big Band, the Scott Gwinnell Dectet, and the Paul Keller Orchestra.
- Appearances at community events, galas, and off-campus venues as far as Ann Arbor, including the Zal Gaz Grotto.
This coming semester, the UDJO has been invited to participate in the inaugural jazz festival at the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center on April 5. Under the direction of Mr. Joshua James and Mr. Patrick Prouty, our students have already experienced incredible opportunities locally, and now we’re ready to take their talents to a national stage with your support.

San Francisco Conservatory of Music Visit
The UDJO has been invited to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in April 2025, to study with top music professors, perform, and experience college life on a prestigious campus. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will showcase U of D Jesuit's exceptional program and give our students a platform to represent Detroit’s rich jazz tradition.
New Piano and Audio Production Laboratory
We are also working to establish a Piano Laboratory, equipped with new piano keyboards and computers with specialized music software, to launch group piano courses beginning in the
2025–2026 academic year.
