In keeping with the mission of the school, the goal of the Campus Safety team is to prevent loss and reduce risk by gathering information, controlling access to all of our campuses and sites, maintaining order and protecting person and property.

Protecting God's Children

As part of the school safety plan at U of D Jesuit, any parent, guardian, or volunteer, who is working with or chaperoning students at or for U of D Jesuit is required to complete the Protecting God’s Children Workshop offered by the Archdiocese of Detroit. The program should be completed before beginning the assignment. The program is approximately 3 hours in length and offered at various parishes and schools throughout the archdiocese.

OK2SAY is a safety program that allows members of the school community or others to confidentially report tips on potential harm or criminal activities directed at students, school employees, and schools directly to the Michigan State Police. It uses a comprehensive communication system to facilitate tip sharing among students, parents, school personnel, community mental health service programs, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and law enforcement officials about harmful behaviors that threaten to disrupt the learning environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of school event(s) require a school background check? Any school-sponsored event wherein students will be observed, directed, or supervised by a volunteer requires a background check.
For how long is my school background check valid? Once completed, a school background check is valid for five (5) years.
Must I complete and submit all the forms in the school background check package? Yes. All of the following five (5) documents must be completed and submitted to Security & Campus Safety: 1) Praesidium Acknowledgement and Authorization form, 2) Praesidium Disclosure Regarding Background Investigation form, 3) Conviction Disclosure form, 4) Archdioceses of Detroit Protecting God's Children Certificate of Completion, and 5) a copy of a drivers license or other government issued photo identification. A background check will not begin unless all five forms are received.
How do I complete the Archdiocese of Detroit Protecting God's Children training? You must go to virtus.org and register online to take a training session. If you have previously completed Protecting God's Children before January 1, 2020, you will have to complete the recertification module also available on virtus.org. If you completed Protecting God's Children after January 1, 2020, your training is current and you need do nothing more. In all cases however, you must include your certificate of completion with your background check documents per FAQ 3. above.
Why must I submit my social security number to complete the background check? The school uses Praesidium, Inc. to conduct background checks. A social security number is one of the personal identifiers required by Praesidium, Inc. to query public records from national and international sources.
What is done with the results of my background check? The results of background checks are for the school's use only. The results are not shared with any other school, person, agency, or entity.
How is my personal identifying information stored and protected? To best protect personal identifying information, the school will not accept documents electronically. The hardcopy forms and background check results are placed in an individual file for each volunteer. The volunteer background check files are stored in a locked file cabinet in the Director of Security and Safety's office, accessible only by the Director of Security & Safety.
Can I submit the forms by email? No. The school will not accept background check forms via email. All forms must be hard copies delivered or mailed to the school, care of the Director of Security and Safety.
Can I submit the background check forms at any time? No. Volunteer background checks are only conducted on an event-by-event basis. You must be committed to helping with a school sponsored event or activity before a background check will be conducted. Background check forms will not be accepted unless the event or activity is identified and the school department sponsoring or conducting the event has notified the Director of Security and Safety that you are a volunteer. Background check forms received without an event designation will not be returned but will be destroyed by the school.
What kind of things discovered in the background check are disqualifying for volunteering at the school? The school is dedicated to the safety of its students and staff, and accordingly, reserves the right to prohibit a person from volunteering if it deems the person in any way unfit. All volunteers must complete the school's Conviction Disclosure Form and are expected to be completely forthcoming and candid about any criminal charges. All felonies are disqualifying for volunteering at the school as are misdemeanors stemming from acts of violence or sexual misconduct. Other misdemeanors, depending on the facts and circumstances, may also be disqualifying. Generally, misdemeanors such as driving under the influence, shoplifting, drug possession, and similar offenses, so long as no aggravating circumstances exist, are not disqualifying. Any questions or concerns about disclosures may be directed to the Director of Security & Safety. Strict confidentiality will be observed. Finally, lack of candor in completing the Conviction Disclosure Form is grounds for deeming an individual unfit for volunteer service.
Is a background check required to attend school events such as plays, sports events, etc.? No. Attendance as a spectator at or accompanying your own child to a school event or function does not require a background check.
Do I still need a background check if I am an active member of the Mom's Club or Dad's Club? Yes. Participation in any school-sponsored event in a role described in FAQ 1. above requires a background check.
How will I be notified of the results of my background check? Notification of the results of background checks is on an exception basis only. Once the school has accepted all your required documents, you may assume your background check has been successfully completed unless you hear otherwise from the school.
Will I be required to submit fingerprints? Certain volunteers in special circumstances may also be required to submit to a fingerprint check. These are generally three circumstances: 1) the volunteer has no current or prior affiliation with the school as a student, parent, or former employee, 2) volunteering at any event requiring overnight accommodations, and 3) long-term volunteering in the role of a coach, or in another capacity wherein the volunteer will not be under the constant supervision of a school faculty or staff member.
