Thomas K. Coyne '62 Scholarship

This scholarship fund has been established to honor the life and legacy of Thomas K. Coyne '62.

Thomas Coyne began at U of D High as a student in the Fall of 1958. After receiving his bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Detroit, he came back to his alma mater in 1968 to begin an almost 50-year dedication to thousands of young men. Tom was more than a biology teacher, serving as a trainer for numerous teams as well as a mentor to his fellow teachers. 

Tom embodied what it meant to be a Man for Others, always there for a student in need of extra help, even if that student wasn't in his class. Towards the latter part of his career, he was working "part-time" but was often seen staying after school assisting students or being a fan of his beloved U of D sports teams. His greatest example of being a Man for Others was his care and compassion for his sister, Sharon. His students were able to see love in action everyday. 

In honor and memory of Mr. Coyne, several former students have instituted the Thomas K. Coyne '62 Scholarship, which will be awarded to a deserving incoming freshman and will span the recipient’s four years of education at U of D Jesuit. Tom's influence on the thousands of students that he taught was life changing. It is the desire of his former students for this scholarship to positively impact the lives of many young men in the years to come.
