Brother Jim Boynton, in memory of Peter John Marsh Scholarship
This scholarship is dedicated to two individuals who exemplify the Jesuit ideal of being MEN FOR OTHERS- Brother Jim Boyton S.J. and Peter John Marsh- whose lives of service, faith and leadership continue to inspire the U of D Jesuit community.
BROTHER JIM BOYTON, S. J.
Brother Jim Boyton S.J., President of U of D Jesuit, has devoted his life to the service of others, especially the young men of U of D Jesuit High School. Through his steadfast presence and compassionate guidance, he has impacted generations of students and upheld the rich Jesuit tradition of forming men of conscience, competence, and compassion. He stands as a representative of all of the Jesuits who have served before him at U of D High, embodying a legacy of faith, education, and service.
PETER JOHN MARSH
Peter John Marsh, the son of Karen and Bill Marsh '65, nephew of Joseph F. McCarthy '61, Godson of John Micheal Leh '65 and first cousin of Dr. Brian Scallen M.D '96 was a man of generosity, faith, and civic commitment. A 1998 graduate of Marquette University, Peter’s leadership and initiative were evident from the start - he founded the school’s first inter mural indoor roller hockey league. After college Peter became a key figure in the revitalization of Detroit, confounding Detroit Synergy, a grassroots initiative that promoted the arts and cultural renewal in the city that he loved.
Peter’s service extended far beyond his professional work as a Realtor and investor in Midtown Detroit. He was a familiar face at local soup kitchens and devoted himself to helping to establish charitable foundations for those in need. Spiritually curious and grounded in faith, Peter studied world religions and frequently attended seminars at Manresa Jesuit Retreat House. As an Eagle Scout, he lived out the Scout Oath each day - committed to God and Country, to others, and to himself. His life was a testament to kindness and helping others.
Peter passed away on October 29, 2020 but his legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the enduring values he championed.
This scholarship serves as a tribute to their example and as a beacon for future students who strive to lead lives of service, faith, and leadership in the spirit of Men for Others.
