Throughout the school year students come together in the chapel or in the gym to celebrate the faith we profess as a Catholic institution. In most cases attendance at these celebrations is compulsory. It is through these celebrations that our school community is reminded of and strengthened in its mission to form Men for Others for the Greater Glory of God.

Before School Mass: Mass is celebrated in the Chapel of the North American Martyrs on many school days at 7:25 a.m. Students and parents should check Cub Notes for a calendar of morning Masses. This is a great way to start the day -- with prayer, the Word of God, and Holy Communion! During the school year various sports teams have adopted certain days of the week in which they come for morning Mass. The Before School Mass in the chapel is open to all students, faculty, staff, parents and members of the community who would like to join us as we celebrate the sacred mysteries of our faith.

All School Masses: Several times a year we gather our entire student body together for the celebration of Holy Mass. Unless otherwise noted on the school's calendar, all of our all-school Masses begin at 9:54 a.m.

As a community we gather to celebrate the following all school Masses:

Mass of the Holy Spirit: This Mass is a Jesuit school tradition which marks the start of each new school year. During this Mass we pray that the same Spirit that came to the disciples and apostles on Pentecost will endow our minds with the knowledge that will surpass our own understanding to have a successful academic year.

Feast of the North American Martyrs: This Mass is held in October of each year. The North American Jesuit martyrs are the patron saints of U of D Jesuit.. They are remembered each year for the ultimate sacrifice that they made in giving up their lives while spreading the message of God in North America.

All Saints: This celebration always occurs on the First of November. The Church celebrates this feast to recognize the lives of those holy men and women who have gone before us and make up the Communion of Saints. On All Saints Day, we reflect on the gifts that each of us carry from day to day that allow us to be a more holy people.

Immaculate Conception: On December 8th of each year the Church celebrates Mary's Immaculate Conception. The Church sets aside December 8th as the day in which we remember that at her own conception Mary was conceived without sin to be the vessel chosen by God to bear Christ. As this pure vessel of God Mary brought forth the Christ Child, who also was born free of sin.

Focus HOPE Food Drive Delivery Mass: Each year the students, faculty and staff of U of D Jesuit adopt 30+ families as a part of Focus:HOPE's Holiday Christmas Drive. The students, faculty and staff collect food and gifts and deliver them to the families in the surrounding communities of Detroit and Highland Park. As a community we gather to pray for the families that we serve, that the joys and peace of the Christmas season may dwell deep within all of our hearts.

Ash Wednesday: Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent each year. Lent itself is a wonderful gift to the Church in which we empty out ourselves, ask for God's forgiveness, and move on knowing that we are loved and forgiven so that we may be ready to receive the risen Christ on Easter. On this day everyone in our community is marked with ashes to remember that we are all sinners who are called to turn away from sin and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Mass of Mission: Our last Mass of each school year is the Mass of Mission. During the Mass of Mission we celebrate our Christian call to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. At this Mass we commission our students who will be participating in the school-sponsored mission trips to Honduras, Chicago, and Detroit, as well as our seniors who will be graduating and preparing for the next stage of their lives.

Quarterly Family Masses: Four times a year you are invited to celebrate Sunday Mass here at U of D as a family. These opportunities are offered in order to give families of our students a chance to worship together and come to know one another better. Following each Family Mass a breakfast is offered in the school cafeteria.

Reconciliation Services: During the seasons of Advent and Lent students are given an opportunity during their theology classes to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Each theology class is dismissed to the chapel for a brief communal service followed by an invitation for individual reconciliation. Several priests make themselves available in order to provide individual confession and absolution.

Stations of the Cross: During the season of Lent, students lead the Stations of the Cross in the chapel. These prayer services are held after school. This is a great opportunity for students, faculty, parents, and other members of the U of D Jesuit community to reflect on the Passion of our Lord and prepare for Easter!
