A.M.D.G. May/June 2010
Dear Parents and Guardians,
This is the last letter I will write to you for the 2009-2010 school year. You may be asking, "Where did the year go?" Many of us around here are wondering the same thing. I remember a former teacher of mine, who said, "The older you become, gentlemen, the faster the year goes." Over the last few years, I have recalled that statement more and more. In terms of your sons' learning, and our role as their teachers, I see the year as continuing beyond June. We simply take on a different rhythm in the summer.
At the end of his Spiritual Exercises, St. Ignatius Loyola has us pray about our commitment to follow the risen Christ during, what he calls, the "Fourth Week." In Kairos, we encourage students to "live the fourth." The academic year closes with the fourth quarter of learning. If we reflect on these "fours," we see that it takes work in order to accomplish what we have set out to achieve. This work often involves new beginnings. Just as we pray to strengthen our bond with God or to work on relationships that we have rediscovered on a Kairos retreat, we must continue to work on all that we have learned this academic year. The key word here is work. I would simply ask that you encourage your sons to work on their summer reading. See that they journal or express themselves through writing. Ask him to practice his foreign language, read the newspaper, or perhaps practice that musical instrument more dutifully. In this way, they reinforce what they have been taught this year. Let's all stay focused in our prayer, and remember our new students who will be joining us next year.
Lastly, I would like to inform you of two new changes next year. You will no longer be receiving the traditional summer mailing; rather, it will be made available to you on the school's website this summer. Secondly, due to the availability of Cub Classroom, teacher conferences will be held twice next year. Teachers will be available for two days in October and March. Please consult the official school calendar, also available on the website, for these important dates. We will still continue the tradition of mini class nights early in the academic year.
On behalf of all of us, thanks for your support this year, and be assured of our prayers this summer. Congratulations to the class of 2010 - they deserve it!
